Celebrating Women In The Fashion Industry

In honor of National Women’s History Month, It’s important to remember the influential women that have paved the way for others to do the same today. It’s important to continue to spread their efforts to today’s generations, so their names are not forgotten.

There are so many influential women in the industry from the past to the present. Without them their wouldn’t be designers, models, style icons, or fashion influencers today. In this month, and everyday we honor them.

I put together a list of some influential women that have impacted the fashion industry and have influenced the industry to be what is is today.

1. Coco Chanel

She needs no introduction. The founder and namesake of the power house brand, Chanel. She was credited for liberating women from the constraints of the corseted silhouette to popularizing tweed suits. She also re-influenced the standards of femininity through the “little black dress.”

She has had a major influence in the fashion industry than any other designer to date. The legacy she has left behind is well respected in the fashion industry today.

2. Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was the epitome of beauty in the 1950’s. She was a sex symbol, who empowered women even after her death. She was known as a singer, actress, and model who propelled unknown designers to fame.

3. Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn was a style icon of the 1960’s. Even after her death her fashion influence is still remembered today. She can be also remembered as a British actress, with one of her memorable roles being, “Breakfast At Tiffany’s.”

4. Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was an artist who was inspired by nature and her native country, Mexico. She broke the barriers and standards of women and created art around gender, class, race, and social class. She was known for her self portraits and use of color. She identified new standards of beauty both in Mexico and the states.

5. Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly was an American actress, who was known for her memorable roles in “High Noon, and “High Society.” She was also widely known as Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier lll. Grace Kelly was a fashion muse with her stunning waist synched gowns to her relaxed and laid back style.

6. Rose Bertin

Rose Bertin is often referred as the first internationally famous fashion designer. Her career started in French fashion as a milliner and merchandise de mode. She opened up her store in 1770 and sold trimmings, lace, and other embellishments. She is credited for dressing Marie Antonette, the Queen of France and bringing fashion and haute couture to pop culture.

7. Madeline Chéruit

Chéruit Is known as the First Lady among female fashion designers. Chéruit mastered her craft in the late 1880’s in the house of Raudnitz & Cie. In 1906, the Raudnitz label became Chéruit, establishing Chéruit as the forefront of women couture of her time. She is credited for presenting the pannier gown, walking suits, and afternoon dresses.

8. Princess Diana

Princess Diana was a member of the British family. Her style influence and activism made her an international sensation. She was the peoples princess and is one of the most memorable members of the monarchy.
