How To Put a Monochromatic Look Together?

You’ve seen celebrities and influencers time and time again rock that monochromatic look, but don’t you ever wonder how they put that look together? Or simply, where to even begin?

Monochromatic can either be a “holy crap” I nailed this look or I’m never wearing this color again look. However, with some styling tips and practice you’ll be rocking more monochromatic looks than you have ever expected!

Follow the style guide bellow and put your favorite colors to use!

Style Tip 1: Choose Your Color

By now, you know what monochromatic is and have seen your favorite influencers and celebrities kill the monochromatic look and you want to try this trend out. So, where do we begin?

Your first step is simply choosing the color you want to wear. I would consider what colors look great against your skin tone and the season your in. If you were wanting to put a look together during the fall/winter I would consider choosing colors that are more classic for the season, such as grey, black, brown, and white/ivory. However, if we were in the spring/summer than I would consider opting for more pastel and bold colors, such as red, yellow, pink, purple, and blue.

However, since you are ideally trying this trend out for the first time and don’t know what colors look great on your skin tone. I would consider going with jewel tones that look great on every skin tone, such as turquoise, emerald, red, and shades of purple. If you don’t have any of these colors in your wardrobe than simply begin with black, white, or grey tones, since they are easily accessible and are always on trend no matter what season or year.

Style Tip 2: Add a Touch of Pattern

Now that you’ve selected your color, your now ready to pull some pieces from your wardrobe. When putting a look together, traditional monochromatic looks have one color to work with in different solid shades. However, consider breaking the barriers and add a bit of pattern!

I added a houndstooth blazer to my black outfit for a bit of drama, as opposed to a solid black blazer. I should worn you though, finding patterns in your similar shade of color can be difficult so, I would only consider adding a bold pattern if you’ve mastered the monochromatic look.

Style Tip 3: Play with Textures

Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures. You want dimension and visual interest in your look, you don’t want a boring one dimensional look. Aside from the daring shade of color in this look, the visual interest is my slip skirt. The reason being, is the shiny metallic tone the skirt rubs off. I paired my skirt over a turtle neck knit sweater and a suede trench coat.

With a daring rust, like the one above, you can clearly see the textures more fiercely than a black shade. I would only opt these bold colors if your feeling daring and reckless. However, textures you can play around with are leather with chiffon, or cotton, suede, and silk.

Style Tip 4: Balance Balance Balance

Balance is key when putting a look together. However, in some instances bending the rules isn’t all bad.

These days bulky looks like the one above are all the rage and are a common lounge wear look. However, I added a bit of balance and opted for a cropped bomber jacket to hit just right at my hips, giving it some dimension with my flared bottoms.

In most common looks you’ll want to balance out your look. If you’re wearing a more structured and fitted top you want a more flared bottom, such as an A-line skirt, or bell bottom. It rings true in reverse as well. For example if your wearing a loose or baggy top, consider wearing a form fitting bottom, such as a skinny Jean or pencil skirt.

Style Tip 5: Accentuate the right Areas

Ladies don’t forget your curves! Yup, that’s right we all have them, especially that one area of our bodies we like to accentuate, so use it!

Personally, I like to accentuate my waist, so in this look I made sure I wore a cropped blazer to emphasize my waist. While still taking into account dimension, texture, pattern, and my over all color of choice.

When you are de-emphasizing a certain area of your body you want to stay away from the lighter shades of color and instead opt for the darker shades of that color. For example if you have wider shoulders you wouldn’t wear lighter shades of color or tanks, instead you would want to wear a bulkier top in a more darker shade.

All in all have fun with it! Mix and match your looks and take into account each tip provided above and in no time you’ll be rocking your next monochromatic look! Hope this segment was useful and I hope to hear back from you guys soon!
